stammering stutterng

All about Steve Hill

I was born in Birmingham on the 13th September 1973. It was at the age of four that I developed a stutter.

This speech impediment had a major affect on my life for the next eighteen years and was something I was determined to overcome.

My parents tried to help me as much as they could. At the outset they booked me into see the local speech therapist.

I continued to attend various forms of traditional speech therapy until I was eighteen years of age. Yes fourteen years of speech therapy and I was still stuttering; to be truthful it was actually becoming even more severe.

The stutter had a massive impact on virtually every decision I ever made. I became quite a shy and reserved person and would prefer to spend time alone rather than socialising with other people.

Some people might presume that this would be quite a lonely existence, I however was very happy and content on my own, after all I did not have any form of speech impediment when talking to myself.

As you will no doubt read on some of the other pages on this website, I managed to eventually achieve fluency when I was aged twenty-two.

I had always imagined and dreamt about what life would be like as a fluent person, not to have to fear stuttering, day in day out.

Fluency is actually even better than words can describe. I feel like I have won the lottery each week for the last five years. Now the world can finally get to know the real Stephen Hill.

As a career I now help other people who have a stuttering problem to achieve fluency.

I run one-to-one speech therapy courses and have produced a number of self-help products for people who are unable to attend a course. These include a seventy minute DVD, an e-book and an audio book.

In my personal life I am a proud parent of a seven year old boy and also a step-father to a fourteen year old girl. I enjoy socialising with my friends and family.

I also like to travel whenever I have the time and enjoy playing sports such as snooker, cricket and football.

FACT

People with a Stutter often find it difficult saying their own name. This is of course embarrassing for the individual and some people have even had their name changed to one they can easily say. Ironically Once the name has been legally changed, the person will often find that they can now say the old name easily but has trouble with the new one.
